“Unfortunately, many people in the South who demanded civil rights were treated with unwarranted hostility. Freedom riders from the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) persevered even through dangerous attacks on their buses. Other activists were also personally targeted. Photographs and video footage show the brutal use of police dogs and fire hoses against civil rights marchers. They could not be protected from radical white supremacists, because the police were there doing the same, if not worse, damage.”
